How much does a website cost?

Written by

One of the most common questions that we receive is, "How much does a website cost?" Great question, and I thought I'd take a moment to expand on cost, investing in your business, and getting what you pay for. Speaking of getting what you pay for, that's the first issue I'd like to tackle. You DO get what you pay for, whether you scrimp and get a quickie website from a random kid you met through a friend, or hire a professional agency that has a genuine handle on design and your business needs. A good website should be considered a solid investment. Much like purchasing a building to place your business in, a website serves as a beacon to help guide customers to your business. With more and more people accessing businesses through the internet, it is an absolute MUST to have a website, and it is essential to have a website that draws customers in and engages them. Oh, and let's not forget the design. Whether a person has a trained eye for design or not, people notice when things aren't "right" with a design layout. They lose interest quickly and veer away from the website to a more engaging site experience.

Back to cost. A website's cost is really relative to who you hire, what your needs are (a small website, a larger website, e-commerce, etc.), the quality of design, the attention to architecture and semantics...I could go on and on. But here's the point of that list - if your "web developer" doesn't address those issues as you build, and just sets up a random site and you're done, you're missing out on a more professional and effective website. So this is where I remind you that you DO get what you pay for. Websites work. Great websites work better. Amazing websites? Well, you know how virality and word of mouth work. My recommendation for businesses as you begin to consider investing in a website? Let your designer know exactly what your goals are, share some examples of sites you like, and let the designer show you exactly how much work and how many hours will be involved in your project. Great websites never happen overnight, and it takes time to code, design, and structure a website that will draw your customers in. This time = money. Your designer works hard and wants you to have a website that works. Get to know your internet marketing team so you can develop a trust that they'll get your website done right and make it an effective investment. Cost can be overwhelming when looking at a major investment, but consider the long term cost of bad design that repels customers.

March is Women's History Month!

Written by

With Women's History Month arriving for 2013, the ladies of the Quantus Creative Social Media Marketing team were asking ourselves, "Who are some of our female heroes through history?" It turns out we have quite a few...women have been busy making stuff happen since the dawn of time! We've narrowed our list down to our top five female heroes, along with some links where you can learn more about these amazing, powerful ladies.

1. Audrey Hepburn - With a genuine love of giving, Audrey often considered her role as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador to be her finest work. Beautiful, elegant, and kind of heart, Audrey makes it to our list for her beauty, both inside and out.

2. Iris Apfel - With a successful Interior Design career built on her own merit, Iris has made fans not only of her stunning work, but of her eclectic sense of style. She stands out as a fashion icon, and dresses the way she wants to, with no apologies. Her sense of self is admirable, but her sense of style is enviable. Kudos to the rare bird of fashion!

3. Henrietta Lacks - You may not know her by name, but her immortal cells became the stuff of scientific breakthroughs in the cancer research world. Without her cells many medical milestones could have been delayed or never even created - polio vaccines, research on viral infections, and countless cancer research studies. Though she remained anonymous for some time, she was finally recognized for her essential role in cellular research in 1996. We're grateful for her contribution to science.

4. Rosa Parks - No. One word completely rattled the nation and strengthened her African American brothers and sisters to stand firm for equality. We think that's 'nuff said, right there.

5. Amelia Earhart - A groundbreaker in aviation and a role model for countless women and young girls around the world, Amelia showed us you can do whatever you want to do, even if it's something the boys' club doesn't think you're capable of. She also made sure her marriage was one with equally important roles, just like she envisioned the aviation world.

Who are some of your female heroes? We'd love to hear from you!

Applebee's Becomes A Social Media Pariah Overnight

Written by

If you've been online this past week on any social media outlet, chances are you've heard about the Applebee's social media disaster that occurred when Applebee's fired a server for taking a snapshot of a fellow server's customer's offensive note on a receipt (St. Louis Pastor Alois Bell scribbled out the automatic 18% gratuity, noting "I give God 10%, why do you get 18?") and posting it on the web where it sparked an outrage among online viewers.

Applebee's got blasted on all ends of the social network, from angry posters on Facebook to Twitter users who refused to let the chain's actions go. Applebee's defense about customer privacy would seem valid, until you notice they have posted customer receipts with positive comments on their social media outlets, effectively violating their own policy. You would think this would be an opportunity for a brand to take responsibility for their actions and make something right out of a bad situation, but Applebee's began committing social media suicide by hiding posts, deleting comments, and arguing with angry customers about the situation at odd hours.

The company has since unhid the post that sparked even more outrage among customers. No one likes to feel like they are being swept under the rug, and hiding a post made people feel like Applebee's was hiding from the problem. The arguing with customers on Facebook just exacerbated the anger coming from the audience. This whole debacle is a great example of how NOT to handle a social media "issue" with a customer or employee. What would I have done as a business owner? Rehire the waitress, leave it with a first warning or some other reprimand, and apologized to the customer and offered some kind of free meal or gift as a courtesy (even though she was out of line saying what she did). Making peace and trying to right the wrong is always the first course of action. If Applebee's had avoided arguing, defensiveness and trying to rationalize the situation and first worked on addressing the two people who were affected, it would have created a better line of communication and allowed people to see a more professional approach to conflict resolution.

What would you have done in Applebee's situation? I'd love to hear from you!
