If you begin to explore your options for implementing and executing sound search engine optimization, you will quickly learn this is a hot topic full of claims, promises and usually hefty fees.  Search engine optimization is essentially making it as easy as possible for search engines to understand what your site is about.  This understanding increases your chances of being returned in organic search results.

Organic search results:  Results that show up in searches that are NOT sponsored or paid for.  These represent the most powerful and effective form of advertising since it is entirely free and most people will look at the first three results.

We’ll use Google as our example, since they are the number one search engine.  The reason Google is the number one search engine is because Google seems to “magically know” what you the user is looking for.  Of course it is not perfect, but it is effective enough to make users come back to Google over and over again for their searches.

How Google accomplishes this is by their proprietary search bot, which crawls your site (looks at it) and attempts to understand the content of your site.  Based on this understanding and other factors, Google then assigns a certain value to your site.  Sites with a higher value and relevancy will get better results than sites that do not.

Search engine optimization is a constantly evolving science because the search bots that determine results are also constantly changing.  In fact, Google’s search bot undergoes changes at least ONCE PER DAY!  That is over 365 changes to the device that is designed to understand what your site is about - how can any company keep up with this?

How you keep up with this is ironically not to focus on the “tricks” of how to make your site appear on page 1.  A few years ago this statement may not have been true, but today it is becoming more and more true.  Instead the focus should be on a sound method that is consistently followed and executed.  This method over time will be recognized by the search engines and naturally will deem your site as important and relevant.  Since search engines only have an incentive to deliver to their users the best results, now your site has a greater chance of being included in those results.

Other tactics to achieve a positive ranking that do not follow a consistent and sound method typically result in short lived results.  Unless you plan for your business to also be short lived, these methods and tactics have no long term value, therefore we do not implement or waste time with them.
